How to Wash and Care for Natural Silk Scarves and Garments

  • Hand-wash only in a basin, lukewarm water (30°C).
  • Use mild soap only (no detergents, no softeners, no bleach).
  • No soaking. Do not rub or wring.
  • Blot in a towel and air-dry in the shade.
  • Iron on the wrong side at moderate heat, no steam.

1) Prep

  • Fill a basin with lukewarm water (around 30°C).
  • Lather a small amount of mild toilet soap in your hands and dissolve the foam into the water.
  • Hand-painted garments should be washed by hand only, separately from store-bought clothing.

2) Hand wash – step by step

  1. Submerge and gently move the silk for 1–2 minutes. Do not soak.
  2. Avoid scrubbing the silk.
  3. Rinse 2–3 times in cool to lukewarm water until clear.
  4. Optional: add 1 tsp white vinegar to the final rinse for extra sheen (not mandatory).

3) Drying

  • Do not wring or twist. Lay flat on a clean towel, roll, and press lightly to absorb water.
  • Lay flat to dry or hang on a hanger without clips.
  • Dry in the shade, away from direct sunlight, heaters, and tumble dryers.

4) Ironing

  • Iron while slightly damp or mist lightly with water – no steam.
  • Iron on the wrong side at a moderate silk setting.
How to identify the wrong side: follow the seam – the side where the seam allowances lie is the wrong side.
  • For hand-painted silk: use a thin cotton pressing cloth.

5) Stains & what to avoid

  • Blot immediately with a clean cloth, then wash the whole item as above. Do not spot-treat with harsh agents.
  • Avoid: laundry detergents, softeners, bleach, stain removers, tumble dryers, strong steam, vigorous rubbing, prolonged soaking, direct sun.

6) Storage & travel

  • Store clean and fully dry, folded in a breathable pouch away from humidity.
  • When traveling, roll instead of folding to reduce creases; hang briefly to let gravity release light wrinkles.

Note: Hand-painted silk is delicate. Slight color release during the first washes is normal—wash separately and avoid rubbing decorative areas.
